Young drivers are not prepared to pass their driving test so says a recent survey conducted on behalf of car insurance brand Ingenie and Roadsafe. The nationwide survey was conducted with 1,000 young drivers between the ages of 17 and 25. The issues revealed by the survey show that young drivers are not prepared to pass their driving test.
Main points revealed by the survey are:
• 50 per cent of drivers admitted to being scared, overwhelmed and nervous when driving for the first time
• Male drivers between the age of 17 and 25 described they were confident when first driving. However, they are more than twice as likely to have an accident in their first month of driving when compared to the same age of female drivers.
• 89 per cent of young drivers take less than the recommended 40 hours of driving education
• Young drivers change their driving style depending on who is riding with them in the car. If their passengers are friends they do not driver as safely as they do when their passengers are their parents.
• 35 per cent admitted to having a collision within the first year of driving
Dr. Lisa Dorn leading psychologist and reader in Driver Behaviour at Cranfield University remarked on the results of the survey saying “Young people are passing their tests with fewer than 40 hours of in-car tuition with a registered instructor. They therefore have a poorer standard of driver education than is recommended, and this produces a feeling of nervousness and a higher chance of a collision, as recognised by the ingenie survey.”
