How to Choose Your First Car

As a young person, many factors go into deciding on your first choice of car. While you have the desire to drive a car which suits your style and fits into your socio-economic world, parents are looking at a car in a completely different light. Like, how much you could possibly get injured in the event of an accident. Well, maybe not in graphic detail just like that, but something close to it, at least. They are also interested in how much the car will cost to insure and if that cost will fit into the family budget. Choosing the right car, whether for economic reasons or coolness factor, is a major life decision. So, the decision should not be made off the cuff and without much family discussion. In order for the fresh young driver to take optimum care of the car, they must adore the car. And, just as important or even more important, the car must be able to be insurable without breaking the family bank. The choice of first car for the beginning driver is an important one, indeed, but does not have to create months of head pounding stress.

Looking at the big car insurance picture, the two most important factors which will affect the monthly premium are the age of the driver and the type of car. The first variable, age of driver, is unchangeable. The second however, is totally up to the purchaser of the car. There are so many options to choose from and one model out there has your name on it – you just have not found it yet. Functionality is typically the primary motivation driving the decision of the parents buying a car for their young new driver. While for the young new driver function is merely a side story. They know the new car will get them from point A to point B; the real dilemma now is having a good idea what they will look like making that trek every day. A wise rule of thumb is fast cars plus young drivers equal high premiums. That is the mantra which needs to keep playing over and over in your mind when searching for that new set of wheels for your new driver. The big shiny engines with the bright shiny exterior are to be avoided at all costs when thinking about the monthly price tag on that car insurance cover. The smaller bodied car with the low powered engine is the type of car to consider when looking for a car which will be car insurance cost friendly and leave some money in the bank to pay for that university education.

The amount of risk is how every insurance company views the cost of issuing a policy to any new young car driver. The insurance company knows, purely by history, how young people behave, how they will drive the car, and ultimately an estimation of how much it will cost them to insure that young person while they learn life lessons on their tab. Young people will be the group which makes careless mistakes the majority of time without much thought of the consequences of those decisions. They will also be the group of drivers which choose to go out late at night and sometimes not be wise and inadvertently not use a designated driver. This is usually not done out of pure ignorance, just the desire to have a good time while throwing caution to the wind. In other words, using a genuine devil may care attitude.

Looking for a car which will attract cheap car insurance also does not involve buying an older car. Older cars are less expensive, but they are also more likely to be poorly maintained which leads to greater amounts of risk to insure. This is not the beginning of receiving a cheap car insurance quote.

Just like young drivers should do some checking around with their peers for which insurance types are giving them good rates for quotes, parents need to do some checking with their peers with kids as to what types of cars are ending up being affordable to insure. This will not only save a lot of time, but save several hours of checking around at the local car lots for a good deal. At first glance, most car models will stick out like sore thumbs as far as obviously being expensive to insure. Some models on the other hand, will seem like they will be expensive to insure but then surprise you. Take your time, check with peers with kids and start being more aware of what types of cars young drivers are driving as you make your way around town. In tough economic times, the majority of young drivers will be driving cars which have ended up being affordable to drive, instead of what they feel will make them look cooler than everyone else.

Choosing the first car which will satisfy both parents’ desire and young drivers’ ego is quite a balancing act. Do not purchase the first car you run into on the lot, and do not let the young driver be the primary decision maker of the bunch. After all, as much as the young driver will spend 99% of their time behind the wheel of that car, a parent is obligated to choose a car which will be safe, functional and not break the family bank for car insurance.
