Compare The Box is the only car insurance comparison website dedicated to telematics or “black box” insurance. It allows consumers to easily compare the various black box or telematics car insurance products available and compare quotations.
The use of GPS telematics technology is becoming more and more widespread in the vehicle insurance market. Previously it was predominantly used in fleet management and for vehicle theft tracking. However, over the past few years car insurers have become aware of its uses to measure driving behaviour.
In 2009 there were only two or three car insurers using the technology. By the end of 2012 there will be more than 12 with all the major UK insurers releasing telematics based policies.
Most traditional car insurance policies are based on:
- Make and model of car
- Age and sex of the driver
- Years driving
- Address where car is kept
Telematics car insurance policies vary much more than traditional policies and the premium can also be calculated using information collected from the box such as
- Mileage driven
- Time of day of driving
- Driving behaviour
